Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the path taken, because enthalpy is a state function.

Statement of Hess's law of constant heat summation:

The enthalpy change of a reaction (heat evolved or absorbed at constant pressure) is the same whether the reaction takes place in a single step or in several steps.

Explanation:

Enthalpy (H) is a state function, so the enthalpy change (delta H) depends only on the initial and final states, not on the path followed. Therefore, if a reaction proceeds by more than one route, the total enthalpy change along each route must be equal.

Example - formation of CO2 from carbon:

Route 1 (one step):

C(s) + O2(g) -> CO2(g); delta H = -393.5 kJ

Route 2 (two steps):

C(s) + 1/2 O2(g) -> CO(g); delta H1 = -110.5 kJ

CO(g) + 1/2 O2(g) -> CO2(g); delta H2 = -283.0 kJ

Sum = -110.5 + (-283.0) = -393.5 kJ
