2.1 Introduction
Mathematics, at its heart, is the study of patterns. When you look at two quantities that change — say, the number of hours you study and the marks you score — you are looking for a connection, a predictable link between them. That link is what we call a relation.
We encounter relations everywhere in daily life. "Brother and sister," "father and son," "teacher and student" — each of these describes a specific connection between two people. Mathematics has its own versions: "the number is less than the number ," "line is parallel to line ," "set is a subset of set ." In every case, a relation involves pairs of objects, and crucially, the order in those pairs matters. "Ram is Shyam's brother" is not the same as "Shyam is Ram's brother" — the first statement is true, the second is false (if Ram is male). Order is everything.
This chapter builds the precise language needed to handle such ordered connections. We begin by learning how to formally link pairs of objects taken from two sets. From there, we define what a relation between two sets actually is — a collection of ordered pairs that satisfy a certain condition. Finally, we zoom in on the most important kind of relation: the function. A function is a special relation that captures the idea of a mathematically perfect correspondence — for every input, there is exactly one output.
The concept of a function is the single most important idea in this chapter, and arguably in all of higher mathematics. It gives us a way to say, with absolute precision, "this quantity depends on that quantity in a definite way."
The entire chapter is a journey from the informal idea of a "connection" to the formal, rigorous definition of a function. This introductory section sets the stage: we are going to learn how to link pairs of objects from two sets, then define relations, and finally, identify those special relations that qualify as functions. Every step builds on the one before it, so pay close attention to the definitions as they appear.
