Strain energy is the elastic potential energy stored in a stretched or compressed body; strain energy per unit volume = (1/2) x stress x strain, and total U = (1/2) x stress x strain x volume.

Definition: When an external force deforms a body within its elastic limit, work is done against the internal restoring (elastic) forces. This work is stored in the body as potential energy called strain energy (or elastic potential energy). When the force is removed, this energy is released as the body returns to its original shape.

Derivation:

Consider a wire of length L and cross-sectional area A, stretched by a force. Let the extension at some stage be x, when the applied force is F.

From the definition of Young's modulus Y:

Y = (F/A) / (x/L) = FL / (Ax)

So the restoring force at extension x is:

F = (Y A / L) x

The work done to stretch it by a further small amount dx is dW = F dx. Total work in stretching from 0 to final extension l:

W = integral of F dx from 0 to l = integral of (YA/L) x dx from 0 to l

W = (YA/L) (l^2 / 2) = (1/2) (YA l / L) l

But the final force is F = (YA/L) l, so:

W = (1/2) F l
