Young's modulus = tensile stress/longitudinal strain; Bulk modulus = volume stress/volume strain; Shear (rigidity) modulus = tangential (shear) stress/shear strain. Each is a ratio of stress to the relevant strain within the elastic limit.

Within the elastic limit, stress is proportional to strain (Hooke's law), and the constant of proportionality is called the modulus of elasticity. There are three such moduli, one for each type of deformation.

  1. Young's modulus (Y):

    It describes the elasticity of a body in length (change in length under a stretching or compressing force).

    Y = longitudinal stress / longitudinal strain = (F/A) / (change in length / original length) = (F L) / (A dL)

    It applies to solids (wires, rods) under tension or compression.

  2. Bulk modulus (K):

    It describes the elasticity of volume - the resistance of a body to a uniform change in volume when subjected to pressure from all sides.

    K = normal (volume) stress / volume strain = - P / (dV / V)

    The minus sign shows that an increase in pressure causes a decrease in volume. Bulk modulus applies to solids, liquids and gases.

  3. Shear modulus (modulus of rigidity, G or eta): …
