The rate at which a warm body cools is proportional to how much hotter it is than its surroundings, for a small temperature excess.

Statement: Newton's law of cooling states that the rate of loss of heat of a body is directly proportional to the difference in temperature between the body and its surroundings, provided the temperature difference is small and the mode of heat loss remains the same (mainly conduction/convection through still air).

If T is the temperature of the body at any instant and T0T_0 is the (constant) temperature of the surroundings, the law is expressed as:

−dQdt∝(T−T0)-\dfrac{dQ}{dt} \propto (T - T_0)

or, since dQ=mc dTdQ = mc\,dT for a body of mass m and specific heat c,

−dTdt=k (T−T0)-\dfrac{dT}{dt} = k\,(T - T_0)
