[!ANSWER] Phylum Porifera (sponges) is characterised by a set of general features that mark it as structurally the simplest of the multicellular animal phyla.

Sponges are almost entirely aquatic, predominantly marine, and sessile as adults, remaining fixed to a substrate rather than moving about. Their body organisation is at the cellular level — individual cells carry out specialised functions, but these cells are not organised into true, integrated tissues or organs the way they are in more complex animals.

The body is perforated by numerous small incurrent pores, the ostia, through which water enters, and one or more larger excurrent openings, the oscula, through which water leaves; internally, the flow is driven by flagellated collar cells called choanocytes, which also trap food particles by phagocytosis.
