Venkat's premium = 1/3 × ₹24,000 = ₹8,000, credited to Srikant and Raman in old ratio 3:2 (₹4,800 and ₹3,200). The ₹12,000 goodwill already in the books is written off in old ratio 3:2 (₹7,200 and ₹4,800).

Concept

This NCERT Class 12 goodwill treatment problem combines two things: the incoming partner brings his share of goodwill in cash, and an old goodwill balance must be removed. Any goodwill already sitting in the books is written off among the old partners in their old profit-sharing ratio before the new premium is dealt with; the fresh premium is then credited to the sacrificing partners.

Working Notes

  • Venkat's share of goodwill = 1/3 × ₹24,000 = ₹8,000.
  • Sacrificing ratio = old ratio 3:2 (nothing else stated).
  • Premium: Srikant 8,000 × 3/5 = ₹4,800; Raman 8,000 × 2/5 = ₹3,200.
  • Write-off of existing ₹12,000 in old ratio: Srikant 12,000 × 3/5 = ₹7,200; Raman 12,000 × 2/5 = ₹4,800.
