Gaining ratio is the ratio in which the remaining partners gain the share of profit given up by a retiring or deceased partner. For each continuing partner it equals New share − Old share, and it is used to charge them for the outgoing partner's goodwill.

Explanation

On a partner's retirement or death his share of profit is distributed among the continuing partners, whose shares therefore rise. The gaining ratio measures this increase:
