Gaining ratio = New share − Old share of each continuing partner; it shows the proportion in which they gain the retiring partner's share and is used to adjust goodwill.

When a partner retires or dies, the share of profit he gives up is taken over by the continuing partners. The ratio in which they acquire this share is called the gaining ratio. It is computed as:

Gaining ratio of a partner = New profit-sharing ratio − Old profit-sharing ratio.
