Siyaram Singh operates at the supervisory level of management, performing crucial functions like maintaining discipline and ensuring quality, and was provided with both monetary (salary increase) and non-monetary (certificate) incentives.

The case study describes Siyaram Singh's role and contributions within Nissar Enterprises. To answer the questions, we first need to understand the level of management Siyaram Singh occupies and the general functions associated with that level, as well as the concept of incentives in an organizational context.

Siyaram Singh's role involves working directly with the actual workforce, passing on instructions from middle management, conveying workers' problems, clearing misunderstandings, and sorting out internal differences. This clearly places him at the operative or supervisory level of management. This level is critical because it is the direct link between the management's plans and the actual execution by the workers. Supervisors are the first-line managers who ensure that work is done according to standards, maintain discipline, and foster a positive work environment. Their effectiveness directly impacts productivity and employee morale.

Incentives are anything that motivates an employee to perform better. They can be broadly classified into monetary (financial) and non-monetary (non-financial) incentives. Monetary incentives directly involve financial benefits, while non-monetary incentives focus on psychological and emotional satisfaction, recognition, and improved working conditions.

  1. Identifying Siyaram Singh's Management Level and Existing Functions

Siyaram Singh's description – "working with the actual work force and passing on instructions of the middle management to the workers," "met the workers and conveyed the ideas of management to them," and "promised the workers to convey their problems to the management" – confirms he is a supervisor or foreman. This is the lowest level of management, directly overseeing the operative employees.

The functions he is already performing as per the case are:

    • Acting as a link between middle management and workers (conveying instructions and problems).
    • Clearing misunderstandings between management and workers.
    • Sorting out internal differences among workers.
    • Uniting the workers.
  2. Stating Five Other Functions of a Supervisor (Part i)

Beyond what is explicitly mentioned in the case, a supervisor performs a wide range of functions essential for smooth operations and worker well-being. Here are five such functions:

    • Planning Daily Work: Supervisors are responsible for planning the day-to-day activities, allocating tasks to individual workers, and setting daily targets to ensure efficient use of resources and timely completion of work.
    • Ensuring Discipline and Order: While Siyaram Singh sorted out existing differences, a continuous function of a supervisor is to maintain discipline among the workers, enforce rules and regulations, and ensure a harmonious and orderly work environment.
    • Providing On-the-Job Training: Supervisors often act as trainers, guiding new workers, demonstrating correct procedures, and helping existing workers improve their skills and efficiency through practical instruction. …
