Meaning

Directing is the function of leading, guiding, supervising, communicating with and motivating subordinates so that they work willingly and efficiently towards organisational objectives. Effective directing follows certain principles.

Principles of Directing

  1. Principle of maximum individual contribution — directing should draw the maximum possible contribution from each employee towards organisational goals.
  2. Principle of harmony of objectives — individual goals and organisational goals should be reconciled so that both are satisfied.
  3. Principle of unity of command — a subordinate should receive instructions from only one superior to avoid confusion and conflict.
  4. Principle of appropriateness of direction technique — the technique of direction (autocratic, democratic or free-rein) should suit the situation and the employees.
  5. Principle of managerial communication — directions must be communicated clearly so that they are understood correctly; two-way communication should be encouraged.
