Meaning

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the regulatory authority that oversees the Indian stock market and the wider securities market. It was established in 1988 and became a statutory body under the SEBI Act, 1992, with its head office in Mumbai. Its basic purpose is captured in its preamble: to protect the interests of investors, and to promote the development of and regulate the securities market.

Functions of SEBI

  1. Protective functions — these safeguard investors: prohibiting insider trading, checking price rigging and fraudulent/unfair trade practices, ensuring fair dealing, and promoting investor awareness and education.
  2. Regulatory functions — these control market participants: registering and regulating stock brokers, sub-brokers, merchant bankers, mutual funds and other intermediaries; regulating takeovers; conducting inquiries and audits of stock exchanges; and framing a code of conduct for the market.
  3. Developmental functions — these grow the market: training of intermediaries, promoting fair practices, permitting internet/electronic trading, and encouraging a flexible and adaptable market.
