Objectives of Special Economic Zones (SEZs)

A Special Economic Zone is a geographical region within a country that has economic laws more liberal than the country's general laws and is treated as foreign territory for the purposes of trade, duties and tariffs. SEZs are established under the SEZ Act with the following main objectives (any five):

  1. Promotion of exports — to increase the export of goods and services by giving units in the zone a tax- and duty-free environment that makes their products competitive in world markets.
  2. Promotion of investment — to attract investment from both domestic and foreign sources, including foreign direct investment, through attractive incentives.
  3. Generation of additional economic activity — to stimulate industrial and commercial activity in the region and thereby accelerate overall economic growth.
  4. Creation of employment opportunities — to generate large-scale direct and indirect employment for the local population.
  5. Development of infrastructure facilities — to create world-class infrastructure such as roads, power, water, telecommunication and ports within and around the zone. …
