Effectiveness versus Efficiency

Effectiveness vs. Efficiency: The Two Sides of Management

Effectiveness and efficiency are two distinct but closely related concepts. For management to be truly successful, it must achieve both — but this requires a careful balance.

  • Effectiveness means doing the right things — completing the task or achieving the goal. It is about the end result.
  • Efficiency means doing things right — using the minimum resources (time, money, labour, materials) to achieve the goal. It is about the process and cost.

Management must aim for high effectiveness with high efficiency. However, in practice, these two aspects often pull in opposite directions, and managers may need to compromise on one to achieve the other.

When Effectiveness is Achieved but Efficiency is Low

A manager can be effective (reach the target) but inefficient (use too many resources).

Example: A company’s target is to produce 5,000 units in a year. Due to frequent power failures, the manager runs double shifts to meet the target. The target is met — so the manager is effective. But the cost is much higher because of extra labour and electricity. The same output (5,000 units) required more inputs than planned. This is effectiveness without efficiency.

When Efficiency is Achieved but Effectiveness is Low

A manager can be efficient (use fewer resources) but ineffective (fail to achieve the goal).

Example: A business focuses on cutting costs and producing goods with fewer resources. It succeeds in reducing expenses — so it is efficient. But it fails to produce the target quantity. As a result, goods do not reach the market, demand falls, and competitors enter. The goal is not achieved — this is efficiency without effectiveness.

The Need for Balance

  • Management must achieve goals (effectiveness) while using minimum resources (efficiency).
  • High efficiency is usually linked with high effectiveness — this is the ideal for all managers. …
