The British did make a few positive contributions — chiefly the railways, and to some extent roads, ports, the telegraph and administrative unity — but these were unintended by-products of policies aimed at serving British interests, not deliberate efforts to develop India.

The concept: intended purpose versus incidental benefit

Almost everything the British built in India was designed to serve British commercial and administrative interests. Yet some of these developments incidentally brought benefits to India. So the honest answer is that there were a few positive contributions, but they were not the intended aim.

The positive contributions

1. The railways — the most important

The introduction of the railways in 1850 was the single most significant contribution. It benefited India by:

  • Breaking geographical and cultural barriers, allowing people to travel long distances.
  • Fostering the commercialisation of agriculture, which reduced the self-sufficiency of village economies (a mixed effect, but a lasting change).

2. Other infrastructure

A basic framework of roads, ports, water transport, and posts and telegraph was created. Although built for colonial needs, this infrastructure remained useful to independent India.

3. Commercialisation of agriculture

While it hurt the farmer at the time, the shift towards producing crops for the market introduced India to a market-oriented, commercial form of agriculture.
