Industry under the reforms
The reforms opened the economy to competition, expecting industry to become more efficient. But the industrial sector actually grew slowly during much of the reform period for several reasons.
Reasons for poor performance
- Cheaper imports displaced domestic goods: With lower tariffs and freer trade, cheaper industrial goods from abroad became available in the Indian market. Buyers turned to these imports, reducing the demand for domestically produced goods and hurting Indian producers.
- Barriers in developed-country markets: While India opened its market, developed countries did not always open theirs to the same extent. Indian producers faced various barriers when trying to export their goods to the markets of developed nations, which limited their export growth.
- Inadequate infrastructure: Industry needs reliable infrastructure such as power, roads and transport. Investment in these remained inadequate, and poor infrastructure raised costs and held back industrial expansion.
- Lack of finance and technology: Domestic industries, especially smaller ones, often lacked the finance and up-to-date technology needed to modernise and compete with cheaper and better foreign goods. …
