A bank's network that allows account access from anywhere in the world operates as a Wide Area Network (WAN), because it spans vast geographical distances across cities, countries, and continents.

When you check your bank balance from a café in Paris while your account was opened in Mumbai, or transfer money from New York to a recipient in Tokyo, you are relying on a network infrastructure that stretches across the entire planet. This kind of connectivity cannot be confined to a single building or even a single city—it demands a network architecture designed for global reach.

A Local Area Network (LAN) connects devices within a limited physical space, typically a single office, school, or home. A bank branch might use a LAN to link computers at teller counters, but that network alone cannot reach beyond the building's walls. Similarly, a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) covers a city or a large campus, connecting multiple branches within one urban area. While useful for regional operations, a MAN still cannot bridge continents.

The defining characteristic of a Wide Area Network is its ability to connect geographically dispersed locations over long distances—often using a combination of leased telecommunication lines, satellite links, undersea fiber-optic cables, and the public internet. Banks build or lease WAN infrastructure to link their data centers, branch offices, ATMs, and online banking servers across countries and time zones. When you log into your account from "any part of the world," your request travels through this WAN, routed through multiple nodes and networks until it reaches the bank's central servers, retrieves your data, and sends it back to your device. …
