A contraindication of an asana is a specific condition, injury, or state in which performing that asana is unsafe or inadvisable — it tells you when not to do the pose.

The word contraindication comes from medicine: it means a reason to withhold a particular treatment because it would cause harm. In the context of asanas (yoga postures), a contraindication is a warning — a physical or medical condition that makes a pose risky or outright dangerous for that person.
