Bt cotton is genetically modified cotton carrying a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis that makes the plant produce its own insecticidal toxin against bollworm and related pests.

The source: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a soil bacterium that, during a particular phase of its growth, produces proteins called Bt (crystal/Cry) toxins that are encoded by a specific gene called cry. Several types exist, such as cryIAc and cryIIAb, which control cotton bollworms, while others (e.g., cryIAb) control corn borers.

How Bt cotton is made: The specific cry gene(s) responsible for the insect-toxic protein are isolated from Bacillus thuringiensis and, using recombinant DNA technology, are introduced into and expressed within the cotton plant's genome — creating a transgenic (Bt) cotton plant that produces the toxin itself.

Mechanism of toxicity: The Bt toxin protein, as produced by the bacterium/transgenic plant, exists as an inactive protoxin. When ingested by a susceptible insect larva (e.g., cotton bollworm), the alkaline pH of the insect's gut activates/solubilizes the protoxin into its active, toxic form. This activated toxin binds to specific receptors on the midgut epithelial cells of the insect, causing the cells to swell and lyse (burst), forming pores. This eventually causes the death of the insect larva feeding on the plant.
