Pest-resistant plants are GM crops made insect/pest resistant, chiefly Bt crops carrying cry genes from Bacillus thuringiensis, and RNAi-based plants that silence a pest's vital gene.

Using genetic engineering, plants can be given built-in resistance to pests, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides. This is part of the TS Intermediate biotechnology-applications unit, which follows the NCERT/CBSE curriculum.

1. Bt crops (Bt toxin):

  • The soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis produces a protein toxin (Bt toxin) coded by genes called cry genes (e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb protect against cotton bollworms; cryIAb against corn borer).
  • The toxin is produced as an inactive protoxin (crystal). When an insect eats it, the alkaline pH of the insect gut solubilises and activates it; the active toxin binds the midgut epithelium, creating pores that kill the insect.
  • The cry gene is introduced into plants like cotton (Bt cotton), making them resistant to specific insect pests.

2. RNА interference (RNAi):

  • RNAi silences a specific mRNA using complementary double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). …
