Bt cotton carries a bacterial (Bacillus thuringiensis) cry gene that makes the plant produce an insecticidal toxin, active only in the alkaline gut of lepidopteran pests like bollworm, giving the crop built-in pest resistance.

Source of the gene: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a soil bacterium that produces crystal (Cry) proteins during a particular phase of its growth. These Cry proteins are toxic to specific insect groups. Different Bt strains produce different Cry proteins, each toxic to a specific group of insects — e.g., cryIAc and cryIIAb control cotton bollworms (Lepidoptera).

Genetic engineering: Scientists isolated the toxin (cry) gene from Bacillus thuringiensis and introduced it into the cotton plant genome using genetic engineering (e.g., Agrobacterium-mediated transformation), creating a transgenic 'Bt cotton' plant that now itself produces the Bt toxin protein in its tissues.

Mechanism of toxicity: The Bt toxin protein exists as an inactive protoxin in both the bacterium and the transgenic plant. When an insect (e.g., cotton bollworm larva) feeds on the Bt cotton plant, it ingests this protoxin. In the alkaline environment of the insect's gut, the protoxin is converted (activated) into its active toxic form. This activated toxin binds to specific receptors on the epithelial cells lining the insect's midgut, creating pores in the cell membrane. This causes cell swelling, lysis (bursting), and ultimately kills the insect larva, protecting the crop from damage.
