Deficiency of an essential element produces a characteristic symptom because that element has a specific metabolic role; when it is missing, the process depending on it fails in a recognisable way.

  • Chlorosis — the yellowing of leaf tissue due to failure of chlorophyll formation or breakdown of existing chlorophyll. It is caused by deficiency of nitrogen (a direct constituent of the chlorophyll molecule), magnesium (part of the porphyrin ring of chlorophyll), iron (needed for chlorophyll synthesis, though not part of the molecule), manganese, zinc, potassium or sulphur (cofactors for enzymes of chlorophyll/protein metabolism). Depending on the element, chlorosis may appear first in young or old leaves (see mobility, Q6).

  • Necrosis — localized death of tissue, often starting at leaf tips and margins and spreading inward. It results from deficiency of calcium (weakens cell walls/membranes), magnesium, copper or potassium (disrupt enzyme activity and water balance essential for cell survival).

  • Inhibition of cell division / stunted growth — meristematic tissue depends on continuous cell division, which needs abundant protein and nucleic acid synthesis; deficiency of nitrogen, potassium, sulphur or molybdenum slows or halts this, producing short internodes and small leaves. …
