Cytokinins are plant hormones best known for promoting cell division; they also delay senescence, overcome apical dominance, and promote morphogenesis/nutrient mobilisation.

Cytokinins are a class of plant growth hormones, chemically related to adenine (e.g., kinetin, zeatin), so named because of their central role in inducing cell division (cytokinesis).

Four physiological effects:

  1. Promote cell division: Cytokinins are essential for cytokinesis; in tissue culture, cell division occurs only when cytokinin is supplied along with auxin.

  2. Delay leaf senescence (Richmond–Lang effect): Applying cytokinin to detached leaves delays their yellowing/ageing by promoting protein synthesis and preventing chlorophyll breakdown, allowing the leaf to mobilise nutrients toward itself.

  3. Overcome apical dominance: Cytokinins counteract auxin-induced apical dominance, promoting the growth of lateral (axillary) buds, so external application can induce the growth of lateral shoots.
