Kinetin is a synthetic cytokinin, first isolated from degraded DNA, and it promotes cell division.

Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones that promote cytokinesis (cell division). Kinetin (6-furfurylaminopurine) was the first cytokinin ever identified — it was isolated as a breakdown product of autoclaved (heat-sterilised, i.e. chemically degraded) herring sperm DNA, which is why it is a purine (adenine) derivative rather than a naturally occurring plant hormone in the strict sense; it is therefore usually described as a synthetic cytokinin.
