Water potential (Ψw) measures the tendency of water to move by diffusion/osmosis; pure water, the reference state, has a water potential of 0.

Water potential is defined as the potential energy of water per unit volume relative to pure water in a reference state, at atmospheric pressure and the same temperature. It is denoted by the Greek letter Ψw (Psi) and is expressed in pressure units (Pascals, or bars/atmospheres).

Water always moves from a region of higher (less negative) water potential to a region of lower (more negative) water potential — this is the driving principle behind osmosis, water absorption by roots, and the ascent of sap in plants.

Water potential of a solution has two main components:

Ψw = Ψs + Ψp

  • Ψs (solute potential/osmotic potential): always negative, becomes more negative as solute concentration increases (dissolved solutes reduce the free energy of water by binding it).
  • Ψp (pressure potential): usually positive in a living cell due to the protoplasm pushing against the cell wall (turgor pressure); can be negative in the case of tension, e.g. in the xylem during transpiration. …
