Water potential is determined chiefly by solute concentration (solute potential) and physical pressure (pressure potential), with matric potential contributing in soil and dry tissues.

Water potential (Ψw) is the measure of the free energy of water in a system, and it determines the direction water will move (always from higher to lower water potential). It is governed by several component potentials, related as:

Ψw = Ψs + Ψp (+ Ψm, where relevant)

  • Solute potential (osmotic potential, Ψs): the effect of dissolved solutes on water potential. Adding solutes to pure water lowers its free energy, so Ψs is always negative (0 or less) — the more concentrated the solution, the more negative its Ψs.
  • Pressure potential (Ψp): the effect of physical pressure on water potential. In a plant cell, as water enters by osmosis, the protoplast pushes against the rigid cell wall, generating turgor pressure, which raises (makes more positive) the water potential, opposing further water entry. Ψp is usually positive in turgid cells but can be negative (as tension) in the transpiration stream inside xylem vessels. …
