The HVZ reaction halogenates the α-carbon of a carboxylic acid using X2/red phosphorus.

Reaction

Carboxylic acids that possess at least one hydrogen atom on the α-carbon (the carbon next to the -COOH group) react with chlorine or bromine in the presence of a small amount of red phosphorus to give the α-halo carboxylic acid.

RCH2COOH→ii) H2Oi) X2, red PRCHXCOOHRCH_2COOH \xrightarrow[\text{ii) H}_2\text{O}]{\text{i) X}_2\text{, red P}} RCHXCOOH

Mechanism outline: red phosphorus reacts with the halogen to generate phosphorus trihalide (PX3), which converts the acid to its acid halide. The acid halide, existing partly in its enol form, is attacked by the halogen at the α-carbon; the resulting α-halo acid halide is then hydrolyzed by water to regenerate the free carboxylic acid, now bearing the α-halogen.
