Antiseptics are microorganism-killing chemicals mild enough to apply directly on skin/wounds, unlike disinfectants which are used on inanimate objects.

Antiseptics are chemical substances which either kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.). Unlike disinfectants, they are not harmful to living tissue and so can be applied directly on wounds, cuts, ulcers, and diseased skin surfaces.

Examples:

  • Dettol: a mixture of chloroxylenol and terpineol, commonly used as an antiseptic for wounds.
  • Tincture of iodine (2-3% solution of iodine in alcohol-water): applied on wounds as a powerful antiseptic.
  • Boric acid (dilute aqueous solution): used as an eye antiseptic.
  • Furacin and soframycin are other examples used as antiseptics. …
