Ligand: In a coordination compound, the ions or molecules bound to the central metal atom/ion by coordinate (dative) bonds are called ligands. Each ligand has at least one donor atom with a lone pair of electrons that it donates to the central metal atom/ion, which acts as the electron-pair acceptor (Lewis acid), while the ligand acts as the electron-pair donor (Lewis base).
Unidentate ligand: A ligand that is attached to the metal ion through only one donor atom is called unidentate (monodentate).
