Ligand = electron-pair-donating ion/molecule bonded to the metal; coordination number = number of donor atoms bonded to the metal; coordination entity = metal + its ligands as one unit; central metal atom/ion = the metal accepting the electron pairs.

  1. Ligand: A ligand is an ion or a neutral molecule that is bonded to the central metal atom/ion in a coordination compound by donating one or more lone pairs of electrons (it acts as a Lewis base). Examples: Cl-, CN-, NH3, H2O. Ligands may be monodentate (one donor atom, e.g. NH3), bidentate (two donor atoms, e.g. ethylenediamine), or polydentate (e.g. EDTA).
  2. Coordination number: The coordination number of the central metal atom/ion is the number of donor atoms (ligand atoms) directly bonded to it, i.e. the number of coordinate bonds it forms with the ligands. For example, in [Fe(CN)6]4- the coordination number of Fe is 6; in [Ag(NH3)2]+ it is 2.
  3. Coordination entity: A coordination entity is the distinct chemical unit consisting of a central metal atom/ion bonded to a fixed number of ligands. It may be neutral, cationic or anionic and is written within square brackets. Examples: [Fe(CN)6]4-, [Ni(CO)4], [Co(NH3)6]3+. …
