A galvanic cell converts chemical energy of a spontaneous redox reaction into electrical energy; the Daniell cell is a standard example.

A galvanic (or voltaic) cell uses a spontaneous redox reaction to produce an electric current. The two half-reactions are physically separated into two half-cells connected by a salt bridge, so electrons must flow through an external wire.

In the Daniell cell:

  • Anode (oxidation, negative electrode): Zn(s) -> Zn2+(aq) + 2e-
  • Cathode (reduction, positive electrode): Cu2+(aq) + 2e- -> Cu(s)
  • Overall: Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) -> Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s) …
