Natural rubber (a 1,4-addition polymer of isoprene, largely cis configuration) is soft, sticky when hot, brittle when cold, and has poor tensile strength and low resistance to abrasion/organic solvents in its raw form — properties which limit its practical use.
Vulcanization is the process by which raw natural rubber is heated with sulfur (usually 3–5%) at a temperature range of about 373–415 K, along with small amounts of additives (such as zinc oxide, accelerators) to improve the properties of the rubber.
Mechanism: During vulcanization, sulfur atoms form cross-links (bridges, -S-S-) between the adjacent long polyisoprene chains of rubber at the reactive double-bond positions. This cross-linking restricts the free sliding of the chains over one another.
Effects/benefits of vulcanization:
- Increases tensile strength and hardness.
- Improves elasticity (rubber returns to its original shape after stretching, over a wider temperature range).
- Increases resistance to oxidation, abrasion, and organic solvents. …
