PHBV is a biodegradable copolymer of 3-hydroxybutanoic and 3-hydroxypentanoic acids; it is useful for biodegradable packaging, medical devices and controlled drug release.

PHBV stands for poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate. It is a copolymer obtained by the condensation copolymerisation of:

  • 3-hydroxybutanoic acid, and
  • 3-hydroxypentanoic acid, through ester linkages.
