Raoult's Law relates a component's partial vapour pressure over a solution to its mole fraction and its pure-state vapour pressure.

Raoult's Law (for a solution of two or more volatile liquids) states that at a given temperature, the partial vapour pressure of each volatile component in the solution is directly proportional to its mole fraction present in the solution.

For a binary solution of components 1 and 2:

p1=x1⋅p1∘p_1 = x_1 \cdot p_1^{\circ}

p2=x2⋅p2∘p_2 = x_2 \cdot p_2^{\circ}

where p1∘p_1^{\circ} and p2∘p_2^{\circ} are the vapour pressures of the pure components, and x1x_1, x2x_2 are their mole fractions in the solution.

By Dalton's Law of partial pressures, the total vapour pressure is:

ptotal=p1+p2=x1p1∘+x2p2∘p_{total} = p_1 + p_2 = x_1 p_1^{\circ} + x_2 p_2^{\circ}

For a solution containing a non-volatile solute in a volatile solvent, Raoult's Law takes a special form: the relative lowering of vapour pressure of the solvent equals the mole fraction of the solute — …
