Osmotic pressure (π) is the pressure needed to stop osmosis of pure solvent into a solution across a semipermeable membrane.

Definition

When a solution is separated from its pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane (which allows only solvent molecules to pass through), the solvent molecules tend to flow into the solution due to osmosis, in order to equalize concentration on both sides. The excess (hydrostatic) pressure that must be applied on the solution side to exactly stop this net flow of solvent is called the osmotic pressure of the solution.

Formula

For a dilute solution, osmotic pressure obeys a law analogous to the ideal gas equation (van't Hoff equation):

π=CRT\pi = CRT

where C is the molar concentration of the solute, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. If n moles of solute are dissolved in volume V, πV=nRT\pi V = nRT.
