An ideal solution obeys Raoult's law exactly at all concentrations, because solute-solute, solvent-solvent, and solute-solvent interactions are all essentially equal.

Definition

A solution is called ideal if it obeys Raoult's law over the entire range of concentration, i.e., the partial vapour pressure of each component equals the vapour pressure of the pure component multiplied by its mole fraction: pA=pA∘xAp_A = p_A^{\circ}x_A and pB=pB∘xBp_B = p_B^{\circ}x_B.

Characteristics

  1. ΔHmix=0\Delta H_{mix} = 0 — no heat is absorbed or evolved on mixing.
  2. ΔVmix=0\Delta V_{mix} = 0 — there is no change in volume on mixing.
  3. The intermolecular forces between A-A, B-B, and A-B molecules are of nearly the same magnitude, so the components mix freely without any net energy change.
