Henry's law relates the solubility of a gas in a liquid to its partial pressure above the liquid: p = K_H x.

Statement

At a constant temperature, the partial pressure of a gas in the vapour phase (p) is directly proportional to the mole fraction of that gas (x) dissolved in the solution.

p=KH⋅xp = K_H \cdot x

where KHK_H is the Henry's law constant, which is different for every gas-solvent pair and depends on temperature.

Interpretation

  • Higher the value of KHK_H for a gas at a given pressure, the lower is its solubility in the liquid.
  • KHK_H values increase with increase in temperature, which is why the solubility of gases in liquids decreases on heating (dissolved gases are expelled on boiling water).

Applications

  1. To increase the solubility of CO2 in soft drinks and soda water, the bottle is sealed under high pressure. …
