Henry's law: at constant temperature the partial pressure of a gas over a solution is directly proportional to its mole fraction in the solution, p = K_H * x.

When a gas is in contact with a liquid, some of it dissolves until an equilibrium is reached between the gas escaping and the gas dissolving. The amount that dissolves depends on how hard the gas is pushed into the liquid, i.e. on its partial pressure.

William Henry (1803) quantified this: at a fixed temperature, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid.

Expressed with mole fraction x of the gas in solution and its partial pressure p:

p = K_H * x
