Among nitrogen's several oxides, NO and N2O are classed as neutral because they do not react as acids or bases.

Nitrogen forms several oxides showing different oxidation states of nitrogen (+1 to +5): N2ON_2O (+1), NONO (+2), N2O3N_2O_3 (+3), NO2/N2O4NO_2/N_2O_4 (+4), N2O5N_2O_5 (+5).

Most of these oxides (e.g. N2O3N_2O_3, N2O5N_2O_5) are acidic because they form the corresponding oxoacids (nitrous acid, nitric acid) on reaction with water. However, two of nitrogen's oxides do not show acidic or basic behaviour towards water and are therefore classified as neutral oxides:
