Structure of XeF2: Xe is sp3d hybridised with 3 lone pairs in the equatorial positions and the 2 F atoms axial - a linear molecule (F-Xe-F = 180 deg).
Preparation of XeF4: Xenon and fluorine are taken in the ratio Xe : F2 = 1 : 5 and heated at 873 K, about 7 bar in a sealed nickel vessel:
