Every communication system, however complex, is built from three essential blocks: a transmitter, a channel carrying the signal (which adds noise), and a receiver.

Basic blocks of a communication system

A generalised communication system consists of the following elements arranged in sequence:

  1. Information source / Input transducer: produces the message to be transmitted (e.g., a microphone converts sound into an electrical signal).

  2. Transmitter: processes the message signal (e.g., modulates it onto a carrier wave) to make it suitable for transmission over the channel, and radiates it (usually via an antenna).

  3. Communication Channel: the physical medium (wire, cable, optical fibre, or free space) that carries the signal from the transmitter to the receiver. During transmission, unwanted signals (noise) get added to the message, degrading it.

  4. Receiver: extracts (demodulates) the original message signal from the received (and noise-corrupted) signal at the other end of the channel.
