Lenz's law gives the direction of induced current: it always opposes the very change in flux that causes it, ensuring energy is conserved.

Statement: The direction of the induced emf (and hence induced current, in a closed circuit) is such that it opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it.

Mathematically, this is captured by the negative sign in Faraday's law:

ε=−dϕBdt\varepsilon = -\frac{d\phi_B}{dt}

Explanation: If the flux through a loop is increasing, the induced current flows in a direction that creates a magnetic field opposing this increase; if the flux is decreasing, the induced current flows to reinforce/oppose the decrease (i.e., tries to maintain the flux). For example, when a magnet's north pole approaches a coil, the induced current flows so as to make the near face of the coil also a north pole, repelling the magnet.
