Infrared radiation is widely used for remote-control signalling and for thermal/night-vision imaging, among other applications.

Uses of infrared rays

Infrared (IR) rays lie in the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and microwaves (wavelength roughly 700 nm to 1 mm), and are strongly absorbed by most materials, producing heating.

  1. Remote controls: IR LEDs are used in remote controls for televisions, air-conditioners, and other electronic gadgets to send coded signals to the device.

  2. Night-vision / thermal imaging: Since all objects above absolute zero emit infrared radiation depending on their temperature, IR (thermal) cameras are used for night vision, surveillance, and to detect warm bodies (people, animals) in the dark, and in medical thermography.
