The angle of dip is the angle between Earth's total magnetic field and the horizontal plane at a given location.

Earth's magnetic field B at a point can be resolved into a horizontal component B_H and a vertical component B_V. The total field B makes an angle with the horizontal; a freely suspended magnetic needle (free to rotate in the vertical magnetic meridian) sets itself along this direction and dips below the horizontal.

The angle of dip (or magnetic inclination), usually denoted by I or delta, is defined as the angle between the total magnetic field and the horizontal. It is related to the components by

tan(delta) = B_V / B_H.
