The angle of dip is the angle between the direction of the Earth's resultant magnetic field and the horizontal plane at a given location.

At any point on the Earth's surface, the Earth's magnetic field is a vector that, in general, does not lie in the horizontal plane - it has both a horizontal component (B_H) and a vertical component (B_V). The angle of dip (or magnetic inclination), denoted δ, is defined as the angle that this resultant magnetic field makes with the horizontal direction at that place.
