Connecting a low-value shunt resistance in parallel with a galvanometer converts it into an ammeter of the desired range.

A galvanometer (resistance GG, full-scale deflection current IgI_g) can measure only very small currents. To convert it into an ammeter that can measure a much larger current II, a low resistance called a shunt (SS) is connected in parallel with the galvanometer coil.

Why it works:

Because SS is in parallel with GG and is much smaller than GG, most of the current entering the combination flows through the shunt, and only the small current IgI_g (which the galvanometer can safely carry) flows through the galvanometer. This allows the combination to measure currents much larger than IgI_g without damaging the galvanometer.

Value of the shunt:

Since GG and SS are in parallel, they have the same potential difference across them:

IgG=(I−Ig)SI_g G = (I - I_g) S

S=IgGI−IgS = \dfrac{I_g G}{I - I_g}

where II is the maximum current to be measured (the desired range of the ammeter).
