Connecting a very small resistance (a shunt) in parallel with a galvanometer diverts most of the current through the shunt, converting the sensitive galvanometer into an ammeter that can measure large currents with low resistance.

Conversion of galvanometer into ammeter

A galvanometer (coil resistance GG, full-scale deflection current IgI_g) can measure only very small currents and also has appreciable resistance, so it cannot be used directly to measure large currents in a circuit.

To convert it into an ammeter that can measure a maximum current II, a low resistance called a shunt (S) is connected in parallel with the galvanometer coil.

Derivation of shunt value: When the total current is II, let IgI_g flow through the galvanometer (giving full-scale deflection) and the remaining (I−Ig)(I - I_g) flow through the shunt. Since the galvanometer and shunt are in parallel, the potential difference across both is the same:

IgG=(I−Ig)SI_g G = (I - I_g) S

⇒S=IgGI−Ig\Rightarrow S = \dfrac{I_g G}{I - I_g}
