A solenoid is a long coil of N closely wound circular turns, each carrying current II and enclosing cross-sectional area AA. Each single turn behaves like a magnetic dipole with moment m1=IAm_1 = IA, directed perpendicular to the plane of the turn (along the axis), by the right-hand rule.
