A current-carrying solenoid behaves like a bar magnet, with a magnetic dipole moment equal to the number of turns times the current times the cross-sectional area.

A solenoid is a long, tightly wound helical coil of NN turns carrying a current II. Each turn is effectively a small circular current loop of area AA, and each such loop has a magnetic moment IAIA directed along the axis of the loop (by the right-hand thumb rule). Since all NN turns are coaxial and carry the same current in the same sense, their moments add up along the common axis.

Therefore the net magnetic moment of the solenoid is:
