A moving coil galvanometer detects current by the torque a magnetic field exerts on a current-carrying coil; a radial field makes this torque proportional to the current, so the deflection directly measures the current.

When a coil of N turns and area A carrying current I is placed in a magnetic field B, it experiences a torque

tau = N I A B sin(theta),

where theta is the angle between the coil plane's normal and B.

To remove the sin(theta) dependence, the galvanometer uses a cylindrical soft-iron core and concave pole pieces that produce a RADIAL magnetic field. In such a field the plane of the coil is always parallel to B, so the field is always along the plane and the torque becomes

tau = N I A B (independent of position).

This deflecting torque is balanced by the restoring torque k*phi of the suspension (k = torsional constant, phi = deflection). At equilibrium:

N I A B = k phi => I = (k / N A B) * phi,
